Diamond Waves (Hishi Seigaiha)

Hishi Seigaiha (Diamond Waves) sashiko pattern, printable stitching diagram

Meaning

Hishi seigaiha takes seigaiha's nested wave scales and redraws them as diamonds. Hishi means diamond or rhombus; seigaiha carries the familiar reading of calm seas and continuing good fortune.

The diamond shape also has its own pattern family, often linked to the water caltrop and read as vitality or prosperity. I read this chart as a joining of those two visual languages: diamond-shaped waves, steady and orderly across the cloth.

History

The documented history is mostly seigaiha's. The wave motif appears in early Japanese material culture and later takes its name from the Heian-period court dance Seigaiha, performed in the gagaku tradition and referenced in The Tale of Genji.

The diamond-lattice version appears today as a named sashiko chart variant. It feels traditional, but its separate history is not as well documented as the base seigaiha wave.

Stitching notes

Hishi Seigaiha builds each wave unit from four nested diamonds that share a single bottom point and fan upward from it. It uses the same nested rhythm as regular seigaiha, but with straight diamond edges instead of curves. The units tile edge to edge across a diagonal lattice.

Traditionally worked in an indigo ombre, palest on the outer diamond and deepening toward the center, so three thread shades are used (the two innermost rings share the deepest blue).

The intermediate rating comes from tracking the long diagonal lines and color changes consistently across the field. Stitch one diagonal family first, then the crossing family, then fill each nested diamond from the center outward, deepest blue innermost.
